_fears-as-gardens-and-driveways-collapse-near-300-home-new-build-estate.webp "Furious locals say their gardens and driveways are collapsing after building work started on a new estate.<br/><br/>Dozens of residents in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts., were shocked when cracks appeared in their driveways.<br/><br/>Large chunks of people’s gardens in George Street also sank by up to 3ft amid fears of a major landslip.<br/><br/>The damage is believed to have been caused by powerful vibrations coming from diggers doing groundworks on a new housing development nearby.<br/><br/>Construction has been temporarily halted as investigations are carried out into the building work which developers blame on “heavy rain”.<br/><br/>Resident Susan Tighe, 81, says a large area of her lawn and driveway has sunk into the ground.<br/><br/>She said: “It was about two months ago it started, they’re just doing the groundwork at the moment. <br/><br/>“You can’t see anything and you can’t go on the site. We’re high up and the fields lower down. We think they’ve taken some of the soil away. <br/><br/>“We think it’s the vibration of the machinery that’s caused the problems. <br/><br/>“The vibration of the machinery has shaken the earth around the garden. <br/><br/>“I could just see a crack in the ground. It wouldn’t stop.<br/><br/>“It’s a civil engineering job. If they don’t do anything about it, it’ll fall in the field.” <br/><br/>Linda Jackson, 74, who lives on the street with her husband Richard, 76, said: “Our concern is because they’ve dug away the bank and left a 15ft drop from <br/>our garden, we’re concerned that the same thing will happen to us and our lawn will fall away. <br/><br/>“Apparently they’re going to build a retaining wall but no one has been here to communicate that with us. We just pick bits up here and there. <br/><br/>“Our garden could slip away. It’s a significant drop. When I walked down there I couldn't believe it. <br/><br/>“We were overlooking the field but now we’re overlooking a building site. <br/><br/>“We don't have a right to a view, but we have a right to know what’s going on. <br/><br/>“What I would particularly like is some assurance as to what’s happening. <br/><br/>“We’ve been living here since they were built 50 years ago and nothing like this has ever happened before.<br/><br/>“Most of the people around here are retired. We’ve had our garden landscaped, so if it disappeared into the field it would be very upsetting. <br/><br/>“We’ve had a lot of rain but that hasn’t caused the issue before. <br/><br/>“The noise and the dust is incredible. <br/><br/>“I can’t put white sheets outside because the air is full of dust. No one gave Sri Lanka a chance at the start of the match. They were battered and bruised by England at home and were smashed by New Zealand and Australia Down Under. But as they say 'Never say Never' in sports. They fought till the final second and found a superhuman in the form of Kusal Perera. Let me remind you, this wasn't scripted. But even the greatest of storytellers wouldn't have scripted it any better. Perera's innings was filled with aggressive stroke play and resilience, defying the South African bowling attack against all odds. <br/><br/>In the first test against South Africa in 2019, Sri Lanka was struggling at 52-3 chasing 304 when Kusal Perera stepped up to the crease with determination in his eyes.<br/>Facing a daunting target, Perera showcased incredible skill and resilience against a formidable South African bowling attack consisting of Dale Steyn, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada. Sri Lanka was slowly moving closer to the target at 206-5 but the 64th over changed things when they lost 2 wickets in two balls, this started a domino effect and Sri Lanka’s score became 226-9 in the 70th over. With Perera at 86 and the no. 11 batter as his non-striker, it looked like South Africa would cruise home easily but Perera shifted gears and started talking in boundaries. He did not spare any bowler, whether Steyn, Rabada, or Maharaj.<br/>Perera defied the odds with every stroke, displaying unmatched courage and determination. <br/>And when he reached his century, the crowd erupted in celebration, recognizing the sheer brilliance of his innings. The job wasn’t done yet.<br/>His teammates watched in awe as he single-handedly led Sri Lanka's charge towards victory.<br/>There was a chance of a catch in the 83rd over but it dropped short of Elgar at 3rd slip, du Plessis picked the ball and aimed at the non-striker’s end but missed the direct hit and went for 5 runs. Even luck was on Sri Lanka’s side that day. Perera continued his conquest and got Sri Lanka home 3 overs later.<br/>He played a match-winning knock of 153*, guiding Sri Lanka to a historic one-wicket victory their 2nd ever in test cricket. Their first one-run victory was also against South Africa at Colombo in 2006.<br/><br/>Kusal Perera's innings will be remembered as one of the greatest displays of skill and determination in the history of cricket.")

_lack-of-investment-making-tenby-harbour-an-39eyesore39-labelled-criminal-by-county-councillor.webp "A lack of investment by Pembrokeshire County Council towards maintaining Tenby’s harbour has been labelled ‘criminal’ by one of the seaside town’s county councillors - leading to parts of the ‘picturesque’ area becoming an ‘eyesore’.<br/>In taking aim at the Local Authority’s lack of ongoing TLC for the harbour, county councillor for Tenby’s North Ward Cllr Michael Williams has sent correspondence to PCC’s streetcare manager Marc Owen calling once again for urgent improvements to the area.<br/>Cllr Williams has long called for work to be carried out, especially to some of the historic arches and garages along Penniless Cove Hill that lead all the way down.<br/>“When will the eyesores of these arches be addressed? They now are an awful blot on the harbour and need urgent attention,” stated Cllr Williams, who also called for the ‘rundown’ looking shelters in the gardens above to be removed.<br/>Some years ago, Tenby Civic Society expressed concern at the condition and appearance of the doors in some of the arches, stating that they were ‘clearly ripe’ for an upgrading project.<br/>“Tenby harbour has totally lacked any real capital investment for many years, and yet we see a continuing rise in fees for users,” continued Cllr Williams.<br/>“I have asked Officers and the Cabinet Member to look again at installing a usable gate on the sluice. Currently it is a waste of space, and if an access is provided could be a catalyst for a major improvement offering safety to vessels in bad weather and an ideal mooring for visiting yachts.”<br/>Works to make the sluice more 'user-friendly' were given the thumbs up by town councillors prior to Covid, with members told of an application from PCC for the replacement of stop logs with sluice control, which would ‘protect and enhance’ the area, as improving the amenity of the harbour.<br/>However, £128,000 of funding from Welsh Government earmarked to carry out improvements seemingly slipped through the net, and the plans never came to fruition.<br/>A recent meeting of Tenby Harbour User's Association, hinted that such plans could be revisited, and that the organisation would provide PCC with all relevant paperwork to start the process of looking for new sources of funding to pursue.<br/>“This harbour is a listed building and deserves enhancement from an aesthetic and financial point of view. It should be noted that the failure maintain a listed building is a criminal offence,” added Cllr Williams.<br/>")
